New Literacies Institute NCTE Media Literacy Award Application
Media Literacy Principles
The New Literacies Institute is a professional development model designed to not only reinforce new media literacies but also demonstrate how media lliteracies are central to lives of today's youth.
The weeklong institute entitled, “Inquire, Collaborate, Create: New Literacies for Teacher Leaders,” focuses on how new digital tools can create challenging and engaging learning opportunities for students and teachers. Teachers come together to learn from leaders in the field of new media literacies, engage in project-based inquiry, and to answer the question: ”What will you contribute as a new media literacies teacher leader?”
New Literacies Institutes have been held across the globe from North Carolina, Massachusetts and as far away as Beijing, China.
The New Literacies Institute provides a unique and sustainable model for teachers to revolutionize their media practices. After the week long institutes teachers attend follow up sessions that allow participants to reflect on how they were able to integrate multimodal practices into their classroom.
A variety of wonderful teacher artifacts emerged from the project-based inquiry approach of the institute. Teachers created lessons on critiquing and creating web-based classrooms, infographics in the social studies class, pop-culture mash-ups and more.
We invite you to explore this e-portfolio and look back on how this journey has unfolded.
Media Literacyis Fundamental
The New Literacies Institute strives to create a cadre of educators that teach students to "access, analyze, evaluate and create media messages. Teachers participated in a Design Studio where they collaborated with a partner to create an innovative inquiry lesson based on local curriculum standards. These hands-on, minds-on experiences prompted teachers to design and produce innovative lessons using new digital media. Throughout the week teachers engaged in 21st century forms of communication by using visual displays and digital tools such as Twitter, YouTube, Nings, and wikis.
The work culminated in a Design Studio Showcase where teachers shared the innovative inquiry projects they created during the week. Teachers explored their leadership styles and create a plan to engage partners and lead new literacy innovations in their school, district, and/or state. Teachers explored new visions and gained new knowledge about how to tap students’ curiosity, unleash creativity, engender 21st century skills, as well as be change agents for a new educational era.
